Is Your Olive Wood Real? Free Authenticity Checker

Not sure if that olive wood piece is the real deal? Our family has been carving genuine Bethlehem olive wood for generations. Use this quick 5-step checker to find out if yours is authentic -- it takes less than 2 minutes.

1 Check the Grain Pattern

Look closely at the wood surface. Genuine olive wood has irregular, swirling grain patterns -- no two pieces look alike. The grain lines are wavy and organic, not straight or uniform. You might see knots, dark streaks, and color variations within a single piece.

Tip: Machine-made imitations often have repetitive, evenly spaced grain lines or a printed-on pattern.

2 Smell the Wood

Rub the surface with your thumb or lightly scratch an inconspicuous area. Real olive wood has a mild, pleasant, slightly fruity scent -- sometimes described as warm and earthy. The scent is subtle, not overpowering.

Tip: Cheap imitations made from other woods or composites often have no scent or smell like chemicals or paint.

3 Check the Weight

Pick up the piece. Olive wood is a dense, heavy hardwood (specific gravity around 0.85-0.95). A genuine piece should feel noticeably solid and heavy for its size -- heavier than pine, cedar, or most common woods.

Tip: If the piece feels surprisingly light or hollow, it may be made from lighter softwood or composite material.

4 Look for Origin Markings

Check for a "Made in Bethlehem," "Made in the Holy Land," or similar origin marking. Many authentic pieces also include a small sticker or stamp from the workshop. Bethlehem has been the center of olive wood carving for over 300 years.

Tip: The absence of a marking doesn't mean it's fake -- some small artisan pieces skip labels. But its presence is a strong positive sign.

5 Check the Color

Natural olive wood color ranges from cream and pale yellow to golden brown, with darker brown or reddish-brown grain lines running through it. Over time, olive wood deepens to a rich honey or amber tone. The color variation within a single piece is natural.

Tip: If the piece is uniformly one color with no variation, or has an unnatural orange/red tint, it may be stained softwood.

Voy a compartir esto con mi grupo de estudio bíblico. Muy práctico. Speaking of which, el rosario de la Tierra Santa que tengo en mi mesita de noche is one of my favorite things. What I appreciate most is that these are genuinely made in Bethlehem by local Christian artisans keeping this ancient craft alive.

Came back to say I finally ordered! Took about 10 days to arrive from the Holy Land. The Holy Land cross is stunning – already planning to order more as gifts.

Sharing this with my small group – so practical and encouraging The olive trees around Bethlehem produce some of the most beautiful wood for carving – centuries of tradition in every piece.
