The Story Behind It

Most wood sculptures for sale at this size are factory-made overseas with machine-cut detail and a stain to cover the seams. Ours aren't. This crucifix came out of a workshop in Bethlehem where the carver worked on it by hand, the whole thing, face to feet.

The olive wood comes from annual pruning of living trees in the Holy Land. Nobody cuts a tree down for this. The families take what the trees give each year and turn it into something that lasts for generations. That practice is as old as the craft itself.

I think about that when I'm photographing a piece like this one. A saint francis statue or a saint christopher statue might stand alone fine.
