When a couple buys their first home together, they usually do not want a saint statue or a crucifix on the entryway wall yet. They want something softer, a little more about the family they are starting. The Holy Family relief on this piece is exactly that, three figures together, no fuss, and the frankincense capsule underneath gives it the scent memory people remember from Christmas Eve. That is why I keep this one in stock year round, not just at Advent.

The story of this piece
The Holy Family relief on this plaque follows the protective composition that became popular in Bethlehem icon workshops after the 1850s, with Joseph as the standing figure rather than the seated patriarch you see in older Byzantine work. The wood comes from olive groves in Beit Sahour, on the eastern edge of Bethlehem, pruned in late 2025 and air dried for 14 months before our carvers began the heart blanks. Each plaque is finished with a single rub of food-safe olive oil so the grain stays alive in the light.
Who this is for
People give this as a housewarming for a young Catholic family, as a wedding gift to a couple starting a household, and as a baptism or first communion keepsake the child grows up seeing on the wall. The frankincense capsule is the part returning customers mention most when they come back for a second one for a sibling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Holy Family medallion glued or pinned to the wood?
Pinned with two small wood pegs from the back, then sealed with a clear adhesive on the contact points. It will not lift off in normal use, even in hot car summer conditions.
Where does the frankincense in the capsule actually come from?
It is real frankincense resin sourced through the same Bethlehem suppliers our parish uses for liturgical incense. It is sealed inside the capsule and does not need re-charging.
What is the difference between this and your Madonna and Child heart plaque?
The other piece carries a Madonna and Child medallion (two figures, Mary holding Christ). This one carries the Holy Family medallion (three figures, Joseph standing protectively over Mary and the Christ Child). The wood, lettering, frankincense capsule and hanger are identical. People pick this one when they want the family triad rather than just the Madonna.
How do I care for olive wood and the metal medallion over time?
Wipe the wood with a dry cotton cloth. Once a year, rub a drop of olive oil into the wood with your finger to keep the grain alive. The pewter medallion can be wiped with a soft dry cloth, do not use silver polish on it.
Care: Keep out of direct sunlight or radiator heat. A drop of olive oil rubbed into the wood once a year keeps the grain alive.
