About This Figure
Pick this up and you immediately feel the weight of it. Seventeen and a half inches of solid olive wood, warm in your hands, with that grain pattern you only get from trees that have been growing in this soil for centuries. This isn't something that came off a conveyor belt somewhere.
If you've been searching for a virgin mary statue for sale that actually carries some meaning, this is the one people keep coming back to. Mary's face is carved with a calm that's hard to describe, and the way she holds the Christ child close, it just reads as tender. Every detail is done by hand, the robes, the folds, the expression. Nothing stamped or cast.
This is one of our best-sellers for a reason. People order one olive wood virgin mary for sale, and then two years later they're back ordering one for their daughter's new home. That's the pattern I see over and over.
From Our Family to Yours
Hi, I'm Elias. I grew up watching these figures come out of the workshops near our shop, and I've been running Zuluf since I was old enough to handle the paperwork. This particular statue, the large Mary and Jesus figure, is one I've always had a soft spot for. There's a version of it sitting on the shelf behind me right now. It's one of those pieces that makes the room feel quieter somehow, and I mean that as a compliment.

A customer from Ohio reached out last year. She'd ordered this as a baptism gift for her granddaughter and told me the whole family gathered around it when it arrived, before it was even wrapped. That's not unusual. These figures have a way of stopping people.

The Story Behind It
The families who carve these pieces have been working with olive wood in Bethlehem for generations. Not as a hobby. As a livelihood, passed from parent to child the way most trades used to work, before everything got outsourced.
Most mary statues you find online are factory-made overseas, poured into molds, painted to look hand-done. These aren't. Every cut on this figure was made by someone who learned the craft from their father, who learned it from his. The olive wood itself comes from annual pruning of living trees, so nothing's being cut down to make these. The trees keep growing. The families keep working. Your order is part of that chain, and that's not marketing language, it's just how it works.
We've been shipping these figures directly from Bethlehem since the beginning. No middlemen, no warehouses in New Jersey. Direct from the workshop to your door.

Care Instructions
Olive wood is low maintenance. If the surface starts looking dry after a few years, rub a small drop of olive oil into it with a soft cloth and it'll come right back. Don't soak it in water or leave it somewhere it gets repeatedly wet. That's really all there's to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this actually handmade in Bethlehem or is that just a marketing thing?
Yeah, genuinely. I've been working with the same artisan families there for years now, my dad did before me. These aren't mass produced somewhere and labeled later. The grain patterns on each one are different because they're carving actual olive wood, the kind that grows slow in that soil and ends up dense and beautiful. You can feel it when you pick it up, there's a warmth to it that you don't get from import stuff. Anyway, yes. Bethlehem. Real families. Not a marketing thing.
How big is it exactly?
Seventeen and a half inches tall. Solid, not hollow.
We're buying several of these as baptism gifts, do you do anything for bulk orders?
So we don't have a formal bulk discount set up on the site, but reach out directly and I'll see what I can do. Depends on quantity honestly. We've done church orders before, it's not unusual. Free US shipping kicks in over $100 so even a couple of these gets you there.
Is this something that could ship as a gift, like does it come protected enough to give straight from the box?
It ships well protected, I'd say it arrives in good shape pretty much every time. If you're giving it as a gift though, you'd probably want to rewrap it yourself, the shipping box is functional not fancy. Most people do that anyway.
Is the wood finish going to hold up or does it scratch easily?
Olive wood's actually pretty tough, it's not like pine where you look at it wrong and it dents. The finish we use now is something I switched to a few years back because the older one was going slightly yellow on lighter pieces over time. This one stays truer to the natural color.
