Olive Wood Madonna and Child Heart Plaque with Holy Water Font, Bethlehem

What it is: A hand-carved olive wood heart plaque from Bethlehem, 20 x 17.7 x 4 cm (7.87 x 6.97 x 1.57 inches), 315 grams. Raised cursive lettering reads "God Bless Our Home". A pewter Madonna and Child relief sits in the upper right corner, showing the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child cheek to cheek in the Eleusa (tenderness) icon tradition. A small silver holy water font, deep enough to hold a thumb dip of blessed water, is mounted directly below the medallion. A gold sunburst container at the bottom holds a sealed capsule of real Bethlehem frankincense. Pre-installed brass triangle hanger on the back.

A Note from the Workshop

A lot of people who buy this one are putting it in a child's room or in a hallway right by the bedrooms. The holy water font is the part that matters there. Parents tell me they refill it after Easter, dip a thumb on the way to bed, and the kids start doing it on their own without being asked. The Madonna face on this medallion is the Eleusa pose, mother and child cheek to cheek, which is the older, softer Marian tradition before the standing icons took over. That is the one I always recommend for a nursery wall.

Carved in Bethlehem Functional Holy Water Font Sealed Frankincense Capsule

The story of this piece

The Eleusa Madonna composition on this medallion traces back to 11th century Constantinople and entered Bethlehem icon work through pilgrim devotion in the late Ottoman period. The wood comes from olive groves in Beit Sahour, on the eastern edge of Bethlehem, pruned in late 2025 and air dried 14 months before the carvers began the heart blanks. The holy water font is a small drawn-silver bowl, set with two pegs into a recessed pocket so it sits flush, and it is functional, not decorative.

Who this is for

People give this for the baptism of a goddaughter, as an anniversary gift to Catholic parents, and as a confirmation gift the recipient hangs by their bed. The combination of the holy water font, the Madonna icon and the frankincense in one piece is unusual, which is why it tends to go to gift recipients who have other religious art already and need something different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the holy water font actually hold water without leaking?

Yes. The font is a drawn pewter-silver bowl with no seams, sealed into the wood pocket from behind. It comfortably holds about a tablespoon of holy water without leaking onto the wood. Refill with blessed water at Easter and after long absences.

What is the difference between this and your Holy Family heart plaque with holy water font?

The other piece carries the Holy Family medallion (three figures: Joseph, Mary, Christ Child). This one carries the Madonna and Child medallion (two figures: Mary and the infant Christ in the Eleusa pose). Wood, font, lettering, frankincense capsule and hanger are identical. Pick this one if you want a Marian focus rather than the family triad.

Can I refill the frankincense capsule when the scent fades?

The capsule is sealed and not designed for refilling. The scent is faint at arm's length and stronger when you hold the piece up close, by design, so it lasts years. If you want a stronger active scent, place a fresh resin pebble inside a small bowl beside the plaque.

How do I clean the holy water font over time?

Empty fully, wipe the inside with a dry cotton swab once a year. Do not use silver polish, soap, or vinegar inside the font, those will dull the finish and risk seeping into the wood pocket.

Care: Keep out of direct sunlight or radiator heat. A drop of olive oil rubbed into the wood once a year keeps the grain alive. Empty and dry-wipe the font yearly.
