This is a mini nativity set hand carved in Bethlehem with a tall 3D olive wood palm tree on one side and an arched frame on the other. Inside the arch the Holy Family is carved at the base, with small cattle and a shining star above. Approximate size 10 x 8 x 4.5 cm (3.9 x 3.1 x 1.8 inches), weight about 74 grams. The Story of this Piece

The 3D palm tree is the harder carving detail on a piece this small. Each frond has to be thin enough to look graceful but thick enough to survive shipping. The carver has to commit to the design before starting, because once a frond breaks off it can't be repaired invisibly.

The palm is the tallest carved element, reaching the full 10 cm of the piece. The arch on the other side is about three quarters of the palm's height, and the figures at the base are around half the height of the palm trunk.

Will the palm fronds break in shipping?

Olive wood is dense and the fronds are sized to handle normal shipping forces. Every piece is double wrapped and padded. We've shipped this design worldwide for years, palm damage is extremely rare.

Does the oval base have a glaze or finish?

The base is natural olive wood, hand finished but not stained or sealed. It develops a deeper warm tone slowly over years of indoor display, which is the look most collectors prefer.

Is the star a separate carving glued on?

No, the star is carved as part of the arch piece itself, raised in relief from the surface. There is no glue and no separate stuck-on element.

Could a child handle this without breaking it?

Yes, with normal supervision. Olive wood is one of the densest woods used in carving and the figures are integral to the base. We do not recommend it as a toy for under-3 (small parts), but for a 6+ year old learning about the nativity it holds up well.
