This is a Holy Family figurine carved as a pentagonal house-shaped relief panel from a single piece of Bethlehem olive wood. Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus are recessed into the front face, with the house silhouette forming a frame around the scene. Approximate size 10.5 x 10 x 3 cm (4.1 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches), weight about 158 grams. Made by Christian artisan families in Bethlehem from olive wood reclaimed from annual pruning of living trees. Sits freestanding on a small ledge or shelf.
About this Olive Wood Holy Family
This is a Holy Family figurine carved as a pentagonal house-shaped relief panel from a single piece of Bethlehem olive wood.
Mary kneeling on one side, joseph standing on the other, baby jesus in the manger between them, all carved as one continuous relief inside a pentagonal house-shaped frame. Single piece of olive wood, relief carved to depth with the figures left raised, pentagonal outline cut around the scene, no glue, no separate pieces.
A Note from the Workshop
I asked the carvers for a Holy Family piece that you could pick up and hold in one hand. The pentagonal house silhouette is the framing detail I like most, it nods to the stable shape without being literal about it. Mary, Joseph, and the baby sit recessed inside the relief so the whole thing reads as one quiet, self-contained scene.

The Story of this Piece
A house-shaped frame is the carver's way of saying "this is where it happened" without literally building a stable. The cleaner the silhouette, the harder it is to carve, the chamfered edges around the pentagon have to be exactly even or the eye notices immediately.
Who it's For
First Holy Communion gift, confirmation goddaughter gift, RCIA welcome gift, a small piece for a desk or bedside table where a full nativity scene would be too much. Works year-round, not just at Christmas.
Care Instructions
Olive wood needs almost no maintenance. If it looks dry after years of indoor display, rub a single drop of food grade olive oil into the surface with a soft cloth. Don't soak it, don't put it in a dishwasher, don't display it outdoors in direct rain. Indoor humidity changes are normal and fine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Holy Family figurine sit upright on its own?
Yes. The base of the pentagonal panel is flat and the back is also flat, so it stands freestanding on any shelf or table without needing a separate stand or holder.
Is this a wall hanging or a freestanding piece?
Freestanding. There is no hanger or hook installed on the back. If you want to wall-mount it, a small picture frame stand or a stick-on adhesive hook works fine.
How detailed are the carved faces?
The figures are stylized rather than realistic. Faces are simplified to soft features, which is the traditional Bethlehem carving style and lets the wood grain show through.
Will the carving look exactly like the photo?
The pose and pentagonal shape will match. Grain pattern, exact dimensions within a few millimeters, and subtle carving differences will vary, since every piece is hand carved one at a time.
How is this different from a printed holy card or icon?
This is a three-dimensional carved object in solid wood, not a printed image. The figures stand out from the surface as relief, you can run a finger over them and feel the depth.
